Quail Interesting Facts

- In some countries quail meat and eggs are believed to have special healing properties. Quail farming history received its start when a Japanese Emperor believed he was cured of his consumption (Tuberculosis) after eating a large quantity of quail meat. Perhaps one of the most interesting and versatile beliefs is that eating large amounts of quail eggs will not only improve your nerves, but it will also stimulate sexual potential.
- The eggs of quail are considered a delicacy, and are sometimes used raw in sushi.
- The California Quail digests vegetation with the help of protozoans in its intestine. Chicks acquire the protozoans by pecking at the feces of adults.
- Despite living in arid environments, the California Quail needs drinking water during periods of sustained heat. During cooler weather, it can get enough moisture from eating insects and succulent vegetation.
- The California Quail make low chattering and grunting sounds. They also make a sound resembling the word “Chicago” with the second syllable emphasized.
- Bobwhites gather in coveys, large groups which may exceed 100 birds. During the day they separate to feed and gather at night or during bad weather. The covey members stay warm and protected by huddling in a circle with their heads turned outwards.
- California Quail like to take dust baths. They scratch out a small pit on the ground and rub and roll through the dust.

- Mated pairs call antiphonally: they alternate calls and fit them into a specific pattern.
- The Bobwhite gets its name from the sound of the male’s whistled call, “Bobwhite”.
- The young are very small and covered with down when they hatch. They follow their mother around as soon as they escape from the shell.
- The Bobwhite feeds on insects and weed seeds. It also makes delicious eating and is a favorite of hunters. Its enemies include foxes, weasels, skunks, hawks, horned owls, and snakes, which after killing Bobwhites, swallow them whole.
- Several California Quail broods may mix after hatching and are attended by all of the parents of those broods. Adults that engage in communal brooding live longer than adults that do not.
- After the breeding season, these birds gather together in large groups called coveys and often visit city parks, gardens, and yards.
- Quail eggs are the smallest commercial eggs marketed.
- Quails are nonmigratory and live in habitats ranging from hot deserts to humid forests. Since the Bobwhite does not migrate, it suffers great hardship in the winter.
- While the California Quail is not a flightless bird, they do not fly very often and make their nests on the ground. The California Quail prefers to nest in open woodlands, brushy areas or valleys near water sources. Many live close to the suburbs.
